Are grillz bad for your teeth? What to know first
Published · Updated · Grillz São Paulo
Summary: A removable grill made from a mould of your teeth, worn a few hours at a time and cleaned properly, causes no tooth wear and needs no dental procedure. Risks come from poor fit, constant wear and poor hygiene — not from the grill itself. Here's what actually causes problems and how to avoid them.

Removable vs permanent: two different products
Before talking about risk, it's worth separating two things that often get confused. Permanent grillz, cemented onto the tooth or made from filed-down teeth, are a dental procedure and should only be performed by a dentist, under clinical supervision.
What we make at Grillz São Paulo is removable only: the piece sits over your natural teeth, with no filing, gluing or drilling involved. It comes off just as easily as it goes on, like a piece of jewellery you put on and take off — not a permanent intervention.
When grillz cause problems
The problems dentists occasionally see with grillz almost always trace back to the same causes, and it's rarely the metal itself. It's usage habits, combined with pieces that were never custom-made in the first place:
- One-size ready-made pieces that sit loose and trap food residue under the metal
- Wearing them all day, every day, without ever taking them out
- Sleeping in the grill, which stops saliva from doing its natural overnight cleaning job
- Eating and drinking sugary or acidic drinks while wearing them
- Not cleaning the piece or brushing teeth before putting it in
- Low-quality metals or unknown alloys that can cause allergic reaction or irritation
How to wear a grill safely
A safe routine is simple and fits in a few steps: brush and floss before putting the piece in, remove it to eat and to sleep, and clean the grill right after each wear with water and a soft brush, storing it dry in a case.
Used this way, a grill works as an accessory for specific moments — events, photoshoots, shows, weekend outings — rather than as a fixed piece worn around the clock. That occasional use is exactly what prevents residue build-up and gum irritation.
If you have active cavities, gum disease, or are undergoing orthodontic treatment, the right move is to deal with that first with your dentist, before considering grillz. Braces and grillz don't mix in practice, since braces already occupy the space a piece would need to fit. After braces come off, a new mould is required, since tooth shape changes during treatment.
Why an individual mould makes all the difference
A grill moulded from your own teeth reproduces the exact shape, spacing and contour of your bite. It fits firmly without squeezing, with no gap where food or saliva can build up, and no uneven pressure on the gums.
That precision is what separates a custom-made mouth piece from a generic costume accessory. One-size pieces, by definition, cannot replicate anyone's bite exactly — and it's precisely the gap between the piece and the tooth that creates the conditions for the problems listed above.
The moulding process at Grillz São Paulo takes about 15 minutes, done with a dental silicone impression or a digital scan depending on availability. There's no wear, drilling or invasive procedure involved at this stage.
Metals, alloys and allergies
We work with solid 925 silver and gold in three karats — 9K, 14K and 18K — in yellow, white and rose. Of these metals, gold is the most inert in contact with the mouth, which makes it a good option for anyone who has had sensitivity to other metals before.
If you have a known allergy to nickel or any other metal, it's important to mention it when booking, so we can recommend the right alloy for your case before the mould is even taken. That early conversation avoids any unpleasant surprise once the piece is finished.
What a grill does not replace
It's worth repeating: nothing we make replaces a dental check-up. A removable grill doesn't treat cavities, correct a bite, or fix gum issues — it's a cosmetic accessory, meant to be worn over teeth that are already healthy or already treated.
Whenever there's doubt about oral health, the right step is to consult a dentist before booking a mould appointment. Once your teeth are in good shape, a grill can be worn comfortably, following the occasional-use and hygiene guidance above.
Booking and support
Appointments are by booking only, with home visits across the city of São Paulo, Greater São Paulo and Campinas, with travel agreed in advance. For clients elsewhere in Brazil, an impression kit is shipped by post with detailed instructions.
Questions about safety, metals or the moulding process can be asked by WhatsApp or email before booking any time, in Portuguese or English.
Signs that something isn’t right
A few signs deserve attention and suggest it’s time to stop wearing a piece and seek guidance: persistent gum redness, bad smell that doesn’t go away after cleaning, tooth sensitivity that wasn’t there before, or any white mark near the gum line. None of these are normal, even with a properly moulded grill.
In practice, the vast majority of these reports are linked to one-size pieces bought without a proper mould, not to custom-made grillz with follow-up guidance. Even so, if you notice any of these signs, the first step is to stop wearing the piece and see a dentist for an evaluation before wearing it again.
Frequently asked safety questions
A common question is whether grillz can hurt the gums the very first time you wear them. With a properly moulded piece, that shouldn't happen; some mild adjustment discomfort in the first few hours is possible, but persistent pain or redness is not normal and deserves attention, including taking the piece out until the fit can be reassessed.
Another frequent question is whether there's a recommended age range for wearing grillz. There's no fixed rule, but it's worth remembering that children and teenagers still losing baby teeth or undergoing orthodontic treatment aren't good candidates, since the bite is still changing and any piece would quickly stop fitting properly.
It's also common to ask whether grillz can be worn alongside a removable clear aligner. Since both occupy the same space in the mouth, you can't wear them at the same time — the recommendation is to take the aligner out only for the specific moments the grill is worn, always following your orthodontist's guidance on the minimum daily wear time for the aligner.
