Grillz and São Paulo's funk and trap scene

Published · Updated · Grillz São Paulo

Summary: Grillz reached São Paulo through 90s and 2000s rap and became a trademark of São Paulo funk and trap over the last decade. Today they're identity jewellery across the city, from the East Zone to downtown and the ABC region, with custom pieces from R$350 per tooth.

A piece of jewellery with history before it got here

Grillz didn't originate in São Paulo, but the city has become one of their most passionate audiences in Brazil. To understand why the piece became such a strong symbol in the city's music scene, it helps to trace the path: from a niche accessory in American hip hop to an identity item worn by MCs, rappers and fans across almost every part of the city.

That history matters because it shapes how we approach every piece we make today: grillz carry cultural meaning, and reproducing that meaning with respect — and with jewellery-grade quality — is part of our job.

From Houston and Atlanta to Galeria do Rock

Grillz began as jewellery within US hip hop culture, particularly in southern scenes like Houston and Atlanta, where they became synonymous with success and flash from the 1980s and 1990s onward. The piece reached Brazil through music videos, album covers and imported rap magazines, at a time when information about American urban fashion travelled more slowly and in fragments.

In São Paulo, Galeria do Rock and the Rua 24 de Maio area downtown were, for years, the spot where everything related to national rap culture converged: clothing, records, caps, imported sneakers — and the first grillz, almost always ready-made, generic and improvised pieces, very different from the custom-mould process that exists today.

It was common for those early pieces not to fit the teeth well, causing discomfort or simply looking unnatural in the mouth. That helps explain why, for a long time, grillz were seen as a stage prop, worn only for photos and performances, rather than a piece for everyday wear.

Funk changes the scale

With the explosion of São Paulo funk through the 2010s, grillz entered a new chapter. The gold tooth became a visual symbol of having made it — of coming up from the hood and earning recognition, a symbol that communicates a whole trajectory without a single word.

MCs from communities in the East Zone, the South Zone, and cities across the Baixada Santista and Greater São Paulo began appearing in videos with ever bigger pieces: not just one or two teeth, but full arches, in visible yellow gold. Audiences wanted to replicate that look, and demand for quality, custom-made pieces grew alongside the genre.

This period was also important for popularising grillz beyond the strictly musical scene: as funk videos circulated widely on social media, the piece came to be seen — and wanted — by a much broader audience than artists alone.

Trap and the iced-out era

Following funk, trap brought a new aesthetic to São Paulo grillz culture: the 'iced out' look, with stones covering the piece from canine to molar, stone-set fangs drawing attention in the smile, and a strong preference for white gold, which lets the stones' sparkle stand out.

The arrival of moissanite made this look far more accessible. With sparkle and cut comparable to diamond but at a fraction of the price, moissanite opened up the iced-out style to an audience that once saw it as out of reach. Today, a stone-set piece in silver with moissanite starts at R$700 per tooth — a far more realistic budget than natural diamond, which remains reserved for those seeking a top-tier piece.

Trap also brought a more minimal aesthetic alongside the iced-out look: smaller pieces in white gold or silver, worn as a discreet everyday accessory — proof that the scene was never only about size, but also about attitude.

From the hood to Jardins: a map of the city

Today grillz cross São Paulo entirely, and each region carries a slightly different use and meaning. In Vila Madalena and Pinheiros, grillz appear as a fashion accessory, worn by people who follow visual trends and streetwear, often in smaller, more discreet pieces.

In Tatuapé, Mooca and other East Zone neighbourhoods, grillz keep a strong connection to the local music scene, worn as stage pieces and identity markers by MCs and producers who keep São Paulo funk's tradition alive. In Jardins, Itaim Bibi and Alphaville, by contrast, grillz are increasingly treated as fine jewellery: 18K gold pieces, set with quality stones, built to last and to communicate status in a more refined way.

What unites all of these regions — and all of these uses — is the pursuit of a piece custom-made for the mouth of the person wearing it. Whatever the style or neighbourhood, grillz only serve their purpose as identity jewellery when they fit well, feel comfortable and truly represent the person wearing them.

A symbol that is also fashion

It's worth noting that, in recent years, grillz have stopped being associated exclusively with funk, rap and trap and have started circulating in fashion settings, editorials and parties with no direct link to urban music. This doesn't erase the piece's origin — if anything, it reinforces how an aesthetic born in the hood and in peripheral scenes became a style reference for the whole city.

This mirrors what happened in the United States decades earlier, when grillz moved from hip hop into high fashion and runways without losing their connection to their cultural origin.

Respect for the origin in every piece

Making grillz in São Paulo means working with an aesthetic that carries history and meaning for a lot of people. That's why every Grillz São Paulo piece is moulded, designed and finished with individual attention — no generic, off-the-shelf piece.

That applies equally to someone wanting a full stone-set arch in moissanite, a direct nod to the trap look, and to someone wanting a single discreet 14K gold tooth for everyday wear. The technique is the same, but the result is always built around the person wearing it, with respect for the cultural context the piece comes from.

How it works for people in the scene

For artists, producers and anyone connected to São Paulo's music scene, the process starts with a quick mould — using a dental silicone impression or digital scan, taking about 15 minutes, with no filing of the tooth and no permanent fixing. Appointments are by booking only, with home visits across São Paulo city, Greater São Paulo and Campinas, and travel agreed in advance.

Plain pieces, like a simple silver or gold grillz, are ready in 5 to 10 days. Gold and stone-set pieces, which require more setting and finishing work, take 10 to 15 days. Payment works with a deposit before casting and the balance due at pickup — a model designed to give predictability both to the client and to our jewellery work.

Why custom fit matters most for stage and video use

Artists who perform regularly have an extra reason to care about fit: a grillz piece that's even slightly loose can shift while rapping, singing or simply smiling for the camera, which shows up immediately on stage or in a close-up shot. A custom mould removes that risk entirely, since the piece is built to sit against the exact contour of each tooth rather than a generic average shape.

This is one of the main reasons why ready-made, one-size pieces fell out of favour among performers in São Paulo as soon as custom moulding became widely available. A piece that needs to be bitten down on, or held with putty, to stay in place simply doesn't hold up through a full show or a long studio session, while a properly moulded grillz can be worn comfortably for hours without needing adjustment.
