Custom-moulded grillz vs ready-made grillz
Published · Updated · Grillz São Paulo
Summary: Ready-made grillz use a generic shape you adjust with mouldable putty; custom grillz are cast from a mould of your own teeth. The moulded piece fits firmly, is more hygienic and is solid metal with a stated karat.

Two ways to get grillz
When someone decides to get grillz, there are essentially two paths: buy a ready-made, one-size piece sold online or in some shops, or commission a custom piece, moulded from your own teeth. The differences between the two go well beyond looks — they affect how the piece fits in your mouth, hygiene, speech, durability and even what the metal is actually made of.
At Grillz São Paulo, we work exclusively with custom pieces: we take a mould using dental-grade silicone impression or a digital scan, in about 15 minutes, or post an impression kit to anywhere in Brazil for clients outside São Paulo. From that mould, each piece is designed, cast and hand-finished to fit exactly on your teeth.
In this post we compare the two options side by side, so you can see where each one fits best and why the custom process is usually worth it for anyone planning to wear the piece regularly.
How ready-made grillz are made
Ready-made pieces, often sold as 'one size', are mass-produced in an average shape designed to loosely fit most dental arches — which, in practice, means they don't fit any specific mouth particularly well.
They usually come with a thermoplastic putty that you heat in hot water and bite into, trying to 'mould' the fit yourself at home, with no professional guidance. The result depends entirely on your own ability to repeat that process, and it rarely ends up feeling truly secure.
In terms of material, ready-made grillz are typically made from a base alloy with a thin gold, silver or other plated finish on top — not solid metal. Over time, with constant contact with saliva, that plating wears down, flakes or discolours, often fairly quickly.
How custom grillz are made
The custom process starts with a mould of your teeth, taken using professional-grade dental silicone or a digital scan — quick, painless, and with no invasive procedure involved, since grillz don't require any filing of the teeth or permanent fixing.
From that mould, we produce a physical plaster model that faithfully reproduces the shape of your arch. We design the piece on that model, choosing the metal — solid 925 silver, 9K, 14K or 18K gold, in white, yellow or rose, all the same price within a given karat — and the style: plain, moissanite stone-set, or natural diamond quoted after the mould.
Casting and finishing are done by hand, with a fitting to check how the piece sits before final delivery. Plain pieces are ready in 5 to 10 days; gold and stone-set pieces take 10 to 15 days, since they involve more casting, stone-setting and polishing steps.
Head to head
- Fit: custom is precise, moulded on your own arch; ready-made is approximate, relying on putty adjustment
- Hygiene: custom leaves no gaps for food to get trapped; ready-made tends to trap residue in the seams
- Speech: custom sits slim and you adapt quickly; ready-made is bulkier and affects speech more at first
- Metal: custom is solid metal with a stated karat on the quote; ready-made is usually plated alloy that flakes over time
- Lifespan: custom lasts years with proper care; ready-made typically lasts only a few months before losing its finish
- Process: custom requires a mould and a production lead time; ready-made is instant, but offers no real personalisation
The everyday impact
The difference between the two really shows up in daily use. A piece that doesn't fit properly tends to shift in the mouth, which means you end up repositioning it with your tongue or fingers often — a habit that's not just uncomfortable but also exposes the piece to more bacteria.
A custom piece, designed on the exact mould of your own teeth, stays in place without any effort. This also makes it easier to speak and smile naturally, since you don't need to compensate for a loose fit.
For anyone planning to wear grillz for events, photos, shows or day-to-day, this level of comfort makes a real difference — it's the difference between constantly being aware you're wearing something in your mouth and forgetting it's even there.
Solid metal vs plated metal
Another important point is what the metal actually is. Custom pieces from Grillz São Paulo are made in solid metal — 925 silver or 9K, 14K or 18K gold — with the karat always stated on the quote. That means the colour and shine come from the metal itself, not from a surface layer.
Ready-made pieces, produced at scale with cost as the priority, usually use a base alloy with a thin layer of precious metal plated on top. That plating wears away with constant contact with saliva, sweat and cleaning products, revealing the base alloy underneath — usually a greyish or yellowish tone that clashes with the original finish.
With solid metal, even though silver naturally tarnishes over time (which is normal and reversible with polishing), the underlying colour never changes, because there's no layer left to wear through.
When a ready-made piece makes sense
There are situations where a ready-made piece can be enough: a costume for a single party night, a one-off look for a photo or video shoot where hours of comfort aren't a priority, or a quick test of the look before deciding to invest in a permanent piece.
In those cases, the lower cost and immediate availability outweigh the limitations in fit and durability, since the use is short-term and occasional.
When custom is worth the investment
For anyone planning to wear grillz regularly — at parties, events, creative work, day-to-day or as part of their personal style — the difference in comfort, hygiene and durability is worth the investment and the production time.
Prices per tooth start at R$350 for solid 925 silver, R$450 for plated dental chrome, R$1,200 for 9K gold, R$1,750 for 14K gold and R$2,100 for 18K gold. Stone-set pieces in silver start at R$700, and in gold at R$1,750, with natural diamonds quoted after the mould. A deposit is required before casting, with the balance due at pickup.
Since we work by appointment only, with no public storefront, the first step is booking the mould — in person across São Paulo city, Greater São Paulo or Campinas, with home visits arranged at booking, or by post via an impression kit sent anywhere in Brazil.
Moulds without leaving home
We know not everyone wants or is able to travel to a studio for a mould. That's why we offer home visits across São Paulo city, Greater São Paulo and Campinas, with travel arranged at the time of booking.
For clients outside those areas, we post an impression kit anywhere in Brazil, with simple instructions to take the impression at home and send it back. The process is the same as an in-person mould, just done at your own pace.
Whichever route you choose, the end result is a piece designed and cast specifically for your arch — something no ready-made grillz can ever replicate, no matter how adjustable the putty might seem.
Taking the next step
If you've already decided you want a custom piece, the process starts with a message via WhatsApp +971 52 695 7620 or email at contact@grillzsaopaulo.com, in Portuguese or English, to talk through style, metal and budget before booking the mould.
From there, we handle every step — mould, casting, stone-setting if applicable, and finishing — up to a final fitting, with the fit adjusted before delivery. It's a slower process than buying a ready-made piece, but it's designed to result in something you'll actually wear comfortably, not something that ends up in a drawer after a frustrated first attempt at adjusting putty.
